What to Expect

Facilitated Climbs

Before each climb, Tree Climbing Eugene shares safety rules and outfits each climber with a climbing saddle and safety gear.

Once ready to go, the climbing facilitator assists each person as they ascend into the canopy where time slows down, senses are heightened, and a completely unique experience can be found.

Some climbers stop at 15 feet in the air, while others go as high as the rope allows; the facilitator communicates with each climber to accommodate their comfort level throughout the ascent and descent.

Climbers should wear clothes that are comfortable to climb in (skirts and excess fabric are not ideal), sturdy close-toed shoes, and be ready to see the world from a new perspective!

We guide a maximum of three climbers at a time, so we also include take-home field journals and access to our “tree library” for exploration as participants rotate through.

Tree Climbing Eugene expects all participants to follow safety guidelines and instructions from the climbing facilitator while in the climbing area.

Please do not expect to climb if you are under the influence of drugs or alcohol. No judgment, this is just a strict safety rule.

Respect the Trees and Land

Tree climbing, like many outdoor activities, has the potential to damage the natural wonders being honored. If done carelessly, climbers can love these trees and their surroundings to death.

Trees are living beings and Tree Climbing Eugene treats them as such, using specific techniques and devices to reduce the impact of climbing. Cambium savers are used on ropes to protect the tree bark from friction and mulch is used to protect roots when needed. Climbers are shown how to navigate the branches gently to minimize the disruption of canopy biodiversity. Special care is also taken to avoid trees that are already inhabited by wildlife.

Tree Climbing Eugene asks all participants to consider the well-being of the trees and honor the indigenous land they’re on.

Safe and Accessible Environment

Climbers are welcomed into an environment that is safe, respectful, non-competitive, and accessible, while still offering a challenge to climbers who enjoy one.

No climbing experience is required and Tree Climbing Eugene strives to adapt climbs so that physical ability is rarely a barrier. At this time, our saddles fit waist sizes 20” to 45” – as soon as we are able to find a manufacturer that makes a climbing saddle larger than 45” we will expand our options.

If you have special accommodations, please reach out! We may not be able to accommodate all requests, but we can promise that we want to learn about what barriers exist and how we can work around them.

Pay-what-you-can open climbs are offered regularly to ensure that income level is not a barrier to tree climbing.

Tree Climbing Eugene also offers discounted pricing on private climbs to organizations who support under-served and under-resourced populations, and BIPOC & LGBTQ+ folks.
